Shinto Muso Ryu
The history of Jodo is one of the most famous in all ancient Japanese martial arts in that it includes legendry accounts (though there is some contention as to the accuracy ) of matches between the most famous of Japanese warriors, Miyamoto Musashi and founder of the art, Muso Gonnosuke
The latter was reputedly the 7th generation headmaster of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, an expert in Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu, and Jikishinkage Ryu (Sword arts). He encountered Musashi sometime between 1596 – 1614 during his travels in the Edo (now Tokyo) district in search of matches with prominent swordsmen of the period.
The legend tells of his match with Musashi and that he was defeated when Musashi used his “jujidome” technique, leaving little alternative than to quit the match or risk serious consequence.
Muso Gonnosuke`s inspiration has become the motto of Shinto Muso Ryu:
“maruki o motte suigetsu o shire”
“Using a round stick, know the solar plexus”
Following the defeat, Muso retreated to Mt Homan; here he undertook austere training and research in ways to overcome the technique of Musashi. It is said he had a divine inspiration, “with a stick, know the suigetsu” Following this insight he fashioned a weapon slightly longer than a sword at 127 cm in length, about 2.5 cm thick. He incorporated techniques of sword, spear, Naginata, and Rokushakubo, and hence developed Shinto Muso Ryu Jojutsu
The lineage survived over 450 years with the 25th Headmaster of the style, Shimizu Takaji being the last recognized Soke. After his sudden passing, no one was appointed the 26th, however he left a legacy of Menkyo Kaiden teachers to carry on the teaching.
Nishioka Tsuneo Sensei was one of these, and after commencing Jodo in 1977, Glen Henry became a personal student of Nishioka Sensei and received Oku Iri, and Mokuroku from him.
Rembuden Chushinkan Dojo follows the line of teaching from Nishioka Sensei.
Chushinkan Dojo is also associated with the International Jodo Federation, a group developed by Takaji Sensei and the famous Donn Draeger Sensei.
This group meets for seminars every three years, with the next scheduled event to be hosted by the Australian Jodo Kai and Chushinkan Dojo in Brisbane Australia 2018
